Dahua's IVD: Add AI Shoplifting Prevention to Your CCTV

Shoplifting is one of the biggest pressures facing UK retailers right now, and for most shops the CCTV system is still a passive witness — it records what happens, but only ever tells you about it afterwards. What if the system you already own could flag suspicious behaviour while it is happening, and help you find the moments that matter in seconds rather than hours?

That is exactly the gap Dahua's new IVD range is designed to fill, and it is why the announcement matters for anyone running retail premises.

What Dahua Has Announced

Dahua's IVD range — led by the IVD5148-3I Intelligent Video Device — is an AI edge-computing device that sits between your existing IP cameras and the wider CCTV system. Rather than being another recorder, it adds a substantial layer of AI processing and behavioural analysis on top of a conventional setup.

The headline specification is impressive:

  • Up to 48 IP camera channels
  • Up to 256 Mbps of incoming, recording and outgoing bandwidth
  • A 64-bit high-performance multi-core processor
  • Three switchable AI processing cards that can be allocated to different analytics tasks

Dahua specifically includes the IVD5148-3I within its Shoplifting Prevention solution, which combines real-time behaviour recognition, automated detection of suspicious activities, rapid alerts and full incident logging.

The Key Idea: Upgrade, Don't Replace

The most interesting part of the announcement is not the hardware — it is where the intelligence lives.

Because the AI processing takes place centrally on the IVD, suitable existing cameras may potentially gain additional intelligence without every camera needing to be replaced. That is a very different proposition from the traditional upgrade path, where adding AI meant rip-and-replacing your camera estate.

For retailers, this changes the economics. The practical question shifts from "can we afford a whole new system?" to "are our current cameras suitable, and how many AI channels do we need?" — which is a site survey conversation rather than a capital project.

What the AI Can Watch For

The IVD5148-3I supports up to 48 channels of AI IVS analytics, depending on resolution and configuration. The analytics relevant to retail include:

  • Tripwire detection — draw a virtual line across a fire exit, stockroom door or till area and be alerted when it is crossed
  • Intrusion detection — flag movement into areas that should be out of bounds
  • Loitering detection — identify someone lingering unusually long at a till, display or entrance
  • Crowd gathering detection — spot groups forming, which often precedes distraction-style theft
  • Climbing detection — useful for stockrooms, loading areas and perimeter fencing
  • People behaviour analysis and smart object detection — more specialised analytics that can be allocated via the AI cards

When defined behaviour is detected, the system can respond automatically: recording, snapshot capture, alarm upload, email notification, camera audio, external alarm output and smart tracking are all supported.

It is worth being precise about what this technology does. This is AI-assisted shoplifting prevention technology designed to identify potentially suspicious behaviour and alert staff in real time. The system identifies behaviour and events for human review — it does not determine that someone has committed an offence. Your team stays in charge of every decision.

Finding Footage in Seconds, Not Hours: AcuPick and WizSeek

The strongest feature in the announcement is arguably the search capability, because it addresses the problem every retailer knows: reviewing hours of footage after an incident.

AcuPick combines front-end camera intelligence with back-end processing to search large amounts of recorded footage and quickly locate a specific person or vehicle. After a suspected theft, the workflow becomes:

  1. Staff identify the individual in one recorded clip.
  2. AcuPick searches for that person across the rest of your footage.
  3. You can potentially establish where they entered and review their movement through the premises.
  4. Every camera they appeared on is located — without manually scrubbing through hours of recordings.

WizSeek works alongside AcuPick and allows intelligent searching across footage using descriptive search terms. On the IVD5148-3I it supports up to 32 two-megapixel channels, 32 four-megapixel channels or 16 eight-megapixel channels, depending on camera type and AI-card allocation. For larger systems where dozens of cameras would otherwise need manual review, that is a significant saving of time — and faster evidence means a better outcome when incidents are reported.

Which Retailers Benefit Most

Dahua positions the IVD range for a broad set of retail and commercial environments:

  • Supermarkets and convenience stores
  • Retail showrooms and car dealerships
  • Parts departments and trade counters
  • Warehouses and high-value stock areas
  • Multi-site retail businesses wanting consistent, centrally-managed intelligence

In practice, any premises where stock is displayed openly and staff cannot watch every angle at once is a candidate.

The IVD5148 Range at a Glance

There are three versions in the range, differing mainly in how many AI processing cards — and therefore AI channels — they provide:

  • IVD5148-1I — 48 camera inputs, one AI card, up to 16 channels of 2MP/4MP AI processing and up to 8 channels of specialised analytics
  • IVD5148-2I — 48 camera inputs, two AI cards, up to 32 channels of 2MP/4MP AI processing and up to 16 channels of specialised analytics
  • IVD5148-3I — 48 camera inputs, three AI cards, up to 48 channels of 2MP/4MP AI processing and up to 24 channels of specialised behavioural and industrial analytics

All three include AcuPick, WizSeek, face recognition, video metadata and IVS analytics. For retail loss prevention, the IVD5148-3I is the model Dahua currently pairs with its Shoplifting Prevention solution.

The Hardware, In Brief

The IVD5148-3I is a compact unit that can be rack-mounted or installed on a desktop. It offers dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, two HDMI outputs plus one VGA output, support for an internal SATA drive of up to 20TB, and runs an embedded Linux operating system manageable through a local or web-based interface. In other words, it drops into a standard comms-room setup without drama.

Could Your Existing System Be Upgraded?

That depends on your cameras, their resolution and how your current system is built — and it is exactly the question a site survey is designed to answer.

At Midland Security Services, we design and install CCTV and alarm systems for residential and commercial clients across the Midlands, with more than 15 years of experience and approved-installer status with the leading manufacturers, including Dahua. If you would like to know whether your existing CCTV could gain AI-assisted behaviour detection and intelligent search, get in touch for a free, no-obligation assessment of your current system.
